  • GREY HARES WALKING GROUP

    light and dark

    Dear Hares,

We stopped walking on March 3rd, and resumed on May 12. We follow strictly the Governement recommendations on social distancing etc.

    The current rules are here:

So it seems that we are permitted to walk together in a group of more than twenty so long as we either respect social distancing or wear a mask.

    PASTIMES

On a different subject, here are a few ideas on how to relieve the boredom of the coming months, in no particular order:

Learn & play bridge (www.bridgebase.com) (You don't need a partner, you can pick one up on the website)

Read classical books for free, courtesy of Project Gutenberg.  (www.gutenberg.org)
And of course the National Library is still open (www.a-z.lu) for e-books
Help add books to the Gutenberg Library by proofreading.
Help add audiobooks to the Librivox Library, or download free audiobooks (https://librivox.org/)
Join Transcribathon (https://transcribathon.eu/) to transcribe and help preserve historical documents
Finally learn Luxembourgish, for example here (https://quattropole.org/en/e_learning)
Catch up on Luxembourgish cinema (http://www.vod.lu/fr/)
    Take some courses

Maybe get that Open University qualification?

Or become a subscriber or editor for Wikipedia?

Or why not help mapmaking by contributing to Openstreetmap

Let me have your suggestions of ways to pass the time however weird and I'll add them to the list.

Mike Mann offers suggestions on keeping fit

At a time when we are encouraged to exercise, there is a plethora of videos and websites offering information on all aspects of fitness catering for all ages and abilities. Many will be tempted to search for those dealing with cardio fitness and muscle endurance or pilates, yoga and qi-gong but don't forget other areas such as relaxation, balance, coordination, breathing and flexibility.

Check, of course, that the source is reputable.

You might also consider keeping a diary of your exercise activity; this will act as a motivator and show you how you are progressing,

For example, I have a walking circuit in my garden which I increase by one lap every time I do it.

Know your limits, start with easily attainable targets and enjoy.

Injuries: for those of you suffering from (sports-related) injuries, I can recommend the YouTube videos of 'bob and brad'. This 'double-act' is entertaining, positive and very professional.

As an example, a search of 'bob and brad achilles tendon' came up with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqAlt1k_-gs

    FOOD

The Government is cooperating with Letzshop to offer a special home delivery service for "vulnerable people", into which category I suspect we can all be shoehorned.
Go to corona.letzshop.lu to make your order of a limited but adequate (if you can cook) list of ingredients you can buy.

    Farmers' Market / Label terroir:
    https://labelterroir.lu/shop-label-terroir

Co-labor produces and sells organic products (and helps reintegrate
    people into the workforce)
    https://www.co-labor.lu/shop.php?p=home&lang=en

Eifeler Frischdienst comes through Neudorf on Friday mornings.

The Scouts will come on demand to do your shopping for you

Lots of stuff on letzshop.lu, including teas from Tee Gschwendner, who come highly recommended by Domo.

Robert suggest that we could open an account with "la Provencal"
www.provencale.lu who are now catering from private customers. I was put off by this line:
"To be able to buy at La Provençale, you must have opened a customer account beforehand. To do this, show up in person at our store reception with identification to fill out an account creation form. The store is open Monday to Friday from 5am to 5pm, Saturday from 5am to 11:30am.", while Ron informs us that there is a minimum spend of 200€

    For the thirsty, Roland suggests:

In spite of their name, Fox only sell beer and crémant (their own brand ) !  They're certainly focussing on the essentials!  I ordered a case of beer - it was delivered (free) on Easter Sunday morning!  Together with 4 free bottles of beer and some nice beer mats.  Now that's service!

    2.  On the other hand, Boissons de Contern sell more or less every drink you can imagine (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).  Also chocolate, crisps, nuts etc. They have a rudimentary website and a 44-page pricelist!  I think they are principally a wholesale company, selling to cafes and restaurants, and also for festivities.  Anyway, they were happy to take my order and have offered to deliver next Tuesday.  Their prices are very reasonable. I have attached their pricelist, to save you the trouble of asking for it.

    3. The website NALA has been set up by some local students, and has the splendid objective of identifying and listing all shops which will deliver or arrange collection. They have found 563 so far! You can also email suggestions to them.
